Isaiah 59:18
Context59:18 He repays them for what they have done,
dispensing angry judgment to his adversaries
and punishing his enemies. 3
He repays the coastlands. 4
Isaiah 64:2
Context64:2 (64:1) As when fire ignites dry wood,
or fire makes water boil,
let your adversaries know who you are, 5
and may the nations shake at your presence!
1 tn Heb “the men of your strife”; NASB “those who contend with you.”
2 tn Heb “like nothing”; NAB “come to nought.”
3 tn Heb “in accordance with deeds, so he repays, anger to his adversaries, repayment to his enemies.”
4 tn Or “islands” (KJV, NIV).
5 tn Heb “to make known your name to your adversaries.” Perhaps the infinitive construct with preposition -לְ (lamed) should be construed with “come down” in v. 1a, or subordinated to the following line: “To make known your name to your adversaries, let the nations shake from before you.”
