Isaiah 40:19

Context

40:19 A craftsman casts 1  an idol;

a metalsmith overlays it with gold

and forges silver chains for it.

Isaiah 41:7

Context

41:7 The craftsman encourages the metalsmith,

the one who wields the hammer encourages 2  the one who pounds on the anvil.

He approves the quality of the welding, 3 

and nails it down so it won’t fall over.”

Isaiah 46:6

Context

46:6 Those who empty out gold from a purse

and weigh out silver on the scale 4 

hire a metalsmith, who makes it into a god.

They then bow down and worship it.

1 tn Heb “pours out”; KJV “melteth.”

2 tn The verb “encourages” is understood by ellipsis (note the preceding line).

3 tn Heb “saying of the welding, ‘It is good.’”

4 tn Heb “the reed,” probably referring to the beam of a scales. See BDB 889 s.v. קָנֶה 4.c.
