Isaiah 40:11

Context

40:11 Like a shepherd he tends his flock;

he gathers up the lambs with his arm;

he carries them close to his heart; 1

he leads the ewes along.

Isaiah 42:13

Context

42:13 The Lord emerges like a hero,

like a warrior he inspires himself for battle; 2

he shouts, yes, he yells,

he shows his enemies his power. 3

Isaiah 53:4

Context

53:4 But he lifted up our illnesses,

he carried our pain; 4

even though we thought he was being punished,

attacked by God, and afflicted for something he had done. 5

1 tn Heb “in his bosom” (so KJV, NAB, NASB, NRSV), an expression which reflects closeness and protective care.

2 tn Heb “like a man of war he stirs up zeal” (NIV similar).

3 tn Or perhaps, “he triumphs over his enemies” (cf. NIV); NLT “will crush all his enemies.”

4 sn Illness and pain stand by metonymy (or perhaps as metaphors) for sin and its effects, as vv. 11-12 make clear.

5 tn The words “for something he had done” are supplied in the translation for clarification. The group now realizes he suffered because of his identification with them, not simply because he was a special target of divine anger.
