37:3 “This is what Hezekiah says: 1  ‘This is a day of distress, insults, 2  and humiliation, 3  as when a baby is ready to leave the birth canal, but the mother lacks the strength to push it through. 4 

Isaiah 61:7

Context

61:7 Instead of shame, you will get a double portion; 5 

instead of humiliation, they will rejoice over the land they receive. 6 

Yes, 7  they will possess a double portion in their land

and experience lasting joy.

3 tn Or “contempt”; NAB, NIV, NRSV “disgrace.”

4 tn Heb “when sons come to the cervical opening and there is no strength to give birth.”

5 tn Heb “instead of your shame, a double portion.”

6 tn Heb “and [instead of] humiliation they will rejoice [over] their portion.” The term תָחָת (takhat, “instead of”) is understood by ellipsis (note the preceding line).

7 tn Heb “therefore” (so KJV, NASB); NIV “and so.”
