Isaiah 37:19

Context
37:19 They have burned the gods of the nations, 1  for they are not really gods, but only the product of human hands manufactured from wood and stone. That is why the Assyrians could destroy them. 2 

Isaiah 42:25

Context

42:25 So he poured out his fierce anger on them,

along with the devastation 3  of war.

Its flames encircled them, but they did not realize it; 4 

it burned against them, but they did notice. 5 

Isaiah 43:2

Context

43:2 When you pass through the waters, I am with you;

when you pass 6  through the streams, they will not overwhelm you.

When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned;

the flames will not harm 7  you.

Isaiah 65:7

Context

65:7 for your sins and your ancestors’ sins,” 8  says the Lord.

“Because they burned incense on the mountains

and offended 9  me on the hills,

I will punish them in full measure.” 10

3 tn Heb “strength” (so KJV, NASB); NAB “fury”; NASB “fierceness”; NIV “violence.”

4 tn Heb “and it blazed against him all around, but he did not know.” The subject of the third feminine singular verb “blazed” is the divine חֵמָה (khemah, “anger”) mentioned in the previous line.

5 tn Heb “and it burned against him, but he did not set [it] upon [the] heart.”

6 tn The verb is understood by ellipsis (note the preceding line).

7 tn Heb “burn” (so NASB); NAB, NRSV, NLT “consume”; NIV “set you ablaze.”

8 tn Heb “the iniquities of your fathers.”

9 tn Or perhaps, “taunted”; KJV “blasphemed”; NAB “disgraced”; NASB “scorned”; NIV “defied”; NRSV “reviled.”

10 tn Heb “I will measure out their pay [from the] beginning into their lap,” i.e., he will give them everything they have earned.
