Isaiah 36:6

Context
36:6 Look, you must be trusting in Egypt, that splintered reed staff. If someone leans on it for support, it punctures his hand and wounds him. That is what Pharaoh king of Egypt does to all who trust in him!

Isaiah 41:1

Context
The Lord Challenges the Nations

41:1 “Listen to me in silence, you coastlands! 1

Let the nations find renewed strength!

Let them approach and then speak;

let us come together for debate! 2

Isaiah 43:2

Context

43:2 When you pass through the waters, I am with you;

when you pass 3  through the streams, they will not overwhelm you.

When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned;

the flames will not harm 4  you.

1 tn Or “islands” (KJV, NIV, CEV); TEV “distant lands”; NLT “lands beyond the sea.”

2 tn The Hebrew term מִשְׁפָּט (mishpat) could be translated “judgment,” but here it seems to refer to the dispute or debate between the Lord and the nations.

3 tn The verb is understood by ellipsis (note the preceding line).

4 tn Heb “burn” (so NASB); NAB, NRSV, NLT “consume”; NIV “set you ablaze.”
