Isaiah 31:5

Context

31:5 Just as birds hover over a nest, 1

so the Lord who commands armies will protect Jerusalem. 2

He will protect and deliver it;

as he passes over 3  he will rescue it.

Isaiah 51:5

Context

51:5 I am ready to vindicate, 4

I am ready to deliver, 5

I will establish justice among the nations. 6

The coastlands 7  wait patiently for me;

they wait in anticipation for the revelation of my power. 8

Isaiah 59:17

Context

59:17 He wears his desire for justice 9  like body armor, 10

and his desire to deliver is like a helmet on his head. 11

He puts on the garments of vengeance 12

and wears zeal like a robe.

Isaiah 66:9

Context

66:9 “Do I bring a baby to the birth opening and then not deliver it?”

asks the Lord.

“Or do I bring a baby to the point of delivery and then hold it back?”

asks your God. 13

1 tn Heb “just as birds fly.” The words “over a nest” are supplied in the translation for clarification.

2 map For location see Map5 B1; Map6 F3; Map7 E2; Map8 F2; Map10 B3; JP1 F4; JP2 F4; JP3 F4; JP4 F4.

3 tn The only other occurrence of this verb is in Exod 12:13, 23, 27, where the Lord “passes over” (i.e., “spares”) the Israelite households as he comes to judge their Egyptian oppressors. The noun פֶּסַח (pesakh, “Passover”) is derived from the verb. The use of the verb in Isa 31:5 is probably an intentional echo of the Exodus event. As in the days of Moses the Lord will spare his people as he comes to judge their enemies.

4 tn Heb “my righteousness [or “vindication”] is near.”

5 tn Heb “my deliverance goes forth.”

6 tn Heb “and my arms will judge [on behalf of] nations.”

7 tn Or “islands” (NIV); TEV “Distant lands.”

8 tn Heb “for my arm” (so NIV, NRSV).

9 tn Or “righteousness” (KJV, NASB, NIV, NRSV, NLT); NCV “goodness.”

10 tn Or “a breastplate” (traditional; so many English versions); TEV “a coat of armour.”

11 tn Heb “and [as] a helmet deliverance on his head.”

12 tn Heb “and he puts on the clothes of vengeance [as] a garment.”

13 sn The rhetorical questions expect the answer, “Of course not!”
