right in his father’s house 1  and say, 2

‘You own a coat –

you be our leader!

This heap of ruins will be under your control.’ 3

Isaiah 15:9

Context

15:9 Indeed, the waters of Dimon 4  are full of blood!

Indeed, I will heap even more trouble on Dimon. 5

A lion will attack 6  the Moabite fugitives

and the people left in the land.

Isaiah 23:13

Context

23:13 Look at the land of the Chaldeans,

these people who have lost their identity! 7

The Assyrians have made it a home for wild animals.

They erected their siege towers, 8

demolished 9  its fortresses,

and turned it into a heap of ruins. 10

Isaiah 25:10

Context

25:10 For the Lord’s power will make this mountain secure. 11

Moab will be trampled down where it stands, 12

as a heap of straw is trampled down in 13  a manure pile.

1 tn Heb “[in] the house of his father” (so ASV); NIV “at his father’s home.”

2 tn The words “and say” are supplied for stylistic reasons.

3 tn Heb “your hand”; NASB “under your charge.”

sn The man’s motives are selfish. He tells his brother to assume leadership because he thinks he has some wealth to give away.

4 tc The Qumran scroll 1QIsaa reads “Dibon” instead of “Dimon” in this verse.

5 tn Heb “Indeed I will place on Dimon added things.” Apparently the Lord is speaking.

6 tn The words “will attack” are supplied in the translation for clarification.

7 tn Heb “this people [that] is not.”

8 tn For the meaning of this word, see HALOT 118 s.v. *בַּחוּן.

9 tn Or “laid bare.” For the meaning of this word, see HALOT 889 s.v. ערר.

10 sn This verse probably refers to the Assyrian destruction of Babylon.

11 tn Heb “for the hand of the Lord will rest on this mountain”; TEV “will protect Mount Zion”; NCV “will protect (rest on NLT) Jerusalem.”

12 tn Heb “under him,” i.e., “in his place.”

13 tc The marginal reading (Qere) is בְּמוֹ (bÿmo, “in”). The consonantal text (Kethib) has בְּמִי (bÿmi, “in the water of”).
