Isaiah 3:24

Context

3:24 A putrid stench will replace the smell of spices, 1

a rope will replace a belt,

baldness will replace braided locks of hair,

a sackcloth garment will replace a fine robe,

and a prisoner’s brand will replace beauty.

Isaiah 22:21

Context
22:21 I will put your robe on him, tie your belt around him, and transfer your authority to him. 2  He will become a protector of 3  the residents of Jerusalem and of the people 4  of Judah.

Isaiah 59:17

Context

59:17 He wears his desire for justice 5  like body armor, 6

and his desire to deliver is like a helmet on his head. 7

He puts on the garments of vengeance 8

and wears zeal like a robe.

1 tn Heb “and it will be in place of spices there will be a stench.” The nouns for “spices” and “stench” are right next to each other in the MT for emphatic contrast. The verb that introduces this verse serves as a discourse particle and is untranslated; see note on “in the future” in 2:2.

2 tn Heb “and your dominion I will place in his hand.”

3 tn Heb “a father to.” The Hebrew term אָב (’av, “father”) is here used metaphorically of one who protects and supports those under his care and authority, like a father does his family. For another example of this metaphorical use of the word, see Job 29:16.

4 tn Heb “house.”

5 tn Or “righteousness” (KJV, NASB, NIV, NRSV, NLT); NCV “goodness.”

6 tn Or “a breastplate” (traditional; so many English versions); TEV “a coat of armour.”

7 tn Heb “and [as] a helmet deliverance on his head.”

8 tn Heb “and he puts on the clothes of vengeance [as] a garment.”
