Isaiah 3:16

Washing Away Impurity

3:16 The Lord says,

“The women 1  of Zion are proud.

They walk with their heads high 2 

and flirt with their eyes.

They skip along 3 

and the jewelry on their ankles jingles. 4 

Isaiah 40:31

Context

40:31 But those who wait for the Lord’s help 5  find renewed strength;

they rise up as if they had eagles’ wings, 6 

they run without growing weary,

they walk without getting tired.

Isaiah 43:2

Context

43:2 When you pass through the waters, I am with you;

when you pass 7  through the streams, they will not overwhelm you.

When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned;

the flames will not harm 8  you.

Isaiah 51:23

Context

51:23 I will put it into the hand of your tormentors 9 

who said to you, ‘Lie down, so we can walk over you.’

You made your back like the ground,

and like the street for those who walked over you.”

1 tn Heb “daughters” (so KJV, NAB, NRSV).

2 tn Heb “with an outstretched neck.” They proudly hold their heads high so that others can see the jewelry around their necks.

3 tn Heb “walking and skipping, they walk.”

4 tn Heb “and with their feet they jingle.”

5 tn The words “for the Lord’s help” are supplied in the translation for clarification.

6 tn Heb “they rise up [on] wings like eagles” (TEV similar).

7 tn The verb is understood by ellipsis (note the preceding line).

8 tn Heb “burn” (so NASB); NAB, NRSV, NLT “consume”; NIV “set you ablaze.”

9 tn That is, to make them drink it.
