Isaiah 24:11

Context

24:11 They howl in the streets because of what happened to the wine; 1

all joy turns to sorrow; 2

celebrations disappear from the earth. 3

Isaiah 60:20

Context

60:20 Your sun will no longer set;

your moon will not disappear; 4

the Lord will be your permanent source of light;

your time 5  of sorrow will be over.

1 tn Heb “[there is] an outcry over the wine in the streets.”

2 tn Heb “all joy turns to evening,” the darkness of evening symbolizing distress and sorrow.

3 tn Heb “the joy of the earth disappears.”

4 sn In this verse “sun” and “moon” refer to the Lord’s light, which will replace the sun and moon (see v. 19). Light here symbolizes the restoration of divine blessing and prosperity in conjunction with the Lord’s presence. See 30:26.

5 tn Heb “days” (so KJV, NAB, NIV, NRSV, NLT).
