tn The Hebrew term translated “sovereign master” here and in vv. 8, 16 is אֲדֹנָי (’adonay).

tn The term אֲרִיאֵל (’ariel, “Ariel”) is the word translated “altar hearth” here. The point of the simile is not entirely clear. Perhaps the image likens Jerusalem’s coming crisis to a sacrificial fire.

tn Or “self-assured”; NASB, NRSV “who are at ease.”

 tn Or “self-confident”; NAB “overconfident.”

tn Heb “everyone who is called by my name” (so NASB, NIV, NRSV).

tn Or perhaps, “makes me obedient.” The text reads literally, “has opened for me an ear.”

tn Heb “the people who provoke me to anger to my face continually.”

tn Or “gardens” (KJV, NASB, NIV, NRSV, NLT).

 tn Or perhaps, “on tiles.”
