Isaiah 18:4

Context

18:4 For this is what the Lord has told me:

“I will wait 1  and watch from my place,

like scorching heat produced by the sunlight, 2

like a cloud of mist 3  in the heat 4  of harvest.” 5

Isaiah 30:18

Context
The Lord Will Not Abandon His People

30:18 For this reason the Lord is ready to show you mercy;

he sits on his throne, ready to have compassion on you. 6

Indeed, the Lord is a just God;

all who wait for him in faith will be blessed. 7

Isaiah 40:31

Context

40:31 But those who wait for the Lord’s help 8  find renewed strength;

they rise up as if they had eagles’ wings, 9

they run without growing weary,

they walk without getting tired.

Isaiah 46:13

Context

46:13 I am bringing my deliverance near, it is not far away;

I am bringing my salvation near, 10  it does not wait.

I will save Zion; 11

I will adorn Israel with my splendor.” 12

1 tn Or “be quiet, inactive”; NIV “will remain quiet.”

2 tn Heb “like the glowing heat because of light.” The precise meaning of the line is uncertain.

3 tn Heb “a cloud of dew,” or “a cloud of light rain.”

4 tc Some medieval Hebrew mss, with support from the LXX, Syriac Peshitta, and Latin Vulgate, read “the day.”

5 sn It is unclear how the comparisons in v. 4b relate to the preceding statement. How is waiting and watching similar to heat or a cloud? For a discussion of interpretive options, see J. N. Oswalt, Isaiah (NICOT), 1:362.

6 tn Heb “Therefore the Lord waits to show you mercy, and therefore he is exalted to have compassion on you.” The logical connection between this verse and what precedes is problematic. The point seems to be that Judah’s impending doom does not bring God joy. Rather the prospect of their suffering stirs within him a willingness to show mercy and compassion, if they are willing to seek him on his terms.

7 tn Heb “Blessed are all who wait for him.”

8 tn The words “for the Lord’s help” are supplied in the translation for clarification.

9 tn Heb “they rise up [on] wings like eagles” (TEV similar).

10 tn Heb “my salvation.” The verb “I am bringing near” is understood by ellipsis (note the previous line).

11 tn Heb “I will place in Zion salvation”; NASB “I will grant salvation in Zion.”

12 tn Heb “to Israel my splendor”; KJV, ASV “for Israel my glory.”
