Isaiah 17:5

Context

17:5 It will be as when one gathers the grain harvest,

and his hand gleans the ear of grain.

It will be like one gathering the ears of grain

in the Valley of Rephaim.

Isaiah 18:4-5

Context

18:4 For this is what the Lord has told me:

“I will wait 1  and watch from my place,

like scorching heat produced by the sunlight, 2

like a cloud of mist 3  in the heat 4  of harvest.” 5

18:5 For before the harvest, when the bud has sprouted,

and the ripening fruit appears, 6

he will cut off the unproductive shoots 7  with pruning knives;

he will prune the tendrils. 8

Isaiah 24:13

Context

24:13 This is what will happen throughout 9  the earth,

among the nations.

It will be like when they beat an olive tree,

and just a few olives are left at the end of the harvest. 10

Isaiah 28:4

Context

28:4 The withering flower, its beautiful splendor,

situated at the head of a rich valley,

will be like an early fig before harvest –

as soon as someone notices it,

he grabs it and swallows it. 11

Isaiah 62:9

Context

62:9 But those who harvest the grain 12  will eat it,

and will praise the Lord.

Those who pick the grapes will drink the wine 13

in the courts of my holy sanctuary.”

1 tn Or “be quiet, inactive”; NIV “will remain quiet.”

2 tn Heb “like the glowing heat because of light.” The precise meaning of the line is uncertain.

3 tn Heb “a cloud of dew,” or “a cloud of light rain.”

4 tc Some medieval Hebrew mss, with support from the LXX, Syriac Peshitta, and Latin Vulgate, read “the day.”

5 sn It is unclear how the comparisons in v. 4b relate to the preceding statement. How is waiting and watching similar to heat or a cloud? For a discussion of interpretive options, see J. N. Oswalt, Isaiah (NICOT), 1:362.

6 tn Heb “and the unripe, ripening fruit is maturing.”

7 tn On the meaning of זַלְזַל (zalzal, “shoot [of the vine] without fruit buds”) see HALOT 272 s.v. *זַלְזַל.

8 tn Heb “the tendrils he will remove, he will cut off.”

9 tn Heb “in the midst of” (so KJV, ASV, NASB).

10 sn The judgment will severely reduce the earth’s population. See v. 6.

11 tn Heb “which the one seeing sees, while still it is in his hand he swallows it.”

12 tn Heb “it,” the grain mentioned in v. 8a.

13 tn Heb “and those who gather it will drink it.” The masculine singular pronominal suffixes attached to “gather” and “drink” refer back to the masculine noun תִּירוֹשׁ (tirosh, “wine”) in v. 8b.
