Isaiah 16:10

Context

16:10 Joy and happiness disappear from the orchards,

and in the vineyards no one rejoices or shouts;

no one treads out juice in the wine vats 1 

I have brought the joyful shouts to an end. 2 

Isaiah 55:12

Context

55:12 Indeed you will go out with joy;

you will be led along in peace;

the mountains and hills will give a joyful shout before you,

and all the trees in the field will clap their hands.

Isaiah 58:14

Context

58:14 Then you will find joy in your relationship to the Lord, 3 

and I will give you great prosperity, 4 

and cause crops to grow on the land I gave to your ancestor Jacob.” 5 

Know for certain that the Lord has spoken. 6 

Isaiah 61:7

Context

61:7 Instead of shame, you will get a double portion; 7 

instead of humiliation, they will rejoice over the land they receive. 8 

Yes, 9  they will possess a double portion in their land

and experience lasting joy.

Isaiah 65:14

Context

65:14 Look, my servants will shout for joy as happiness fills their hearts! 10 

But you will cry out as sorrow fills your hearts; 11 

you will wail because your spirits will be crushed. 12 

Isaiah 65:18

Context

65:18 But be happy and rejoice forevermore

over what I am about to create!

For look, I am ready to create Jerusalem 13  to be a source of joy, 14 

and her people to be a source of happiness. 15 

1 tn Heb “wine in the vats the treader does not tread.”

2 sn The Lord appears to be the speaker here. See 15:9.

3 tn For a parallel use of the phrase “find joy in” (Hitpael of עָנַג [’anag] followed by the preposition עַל [’al]), see Ps 37:4.

4 tn Heb “and I will cause you to ride upon the heights of the land.” The statement seems to be an allusion to Deut 32:13, where it is associated, as here, with God’s abundant provision of food.

5 tn Heb “and I will cause you to eat the inheritance of Jacob your father.” The Hebrew term נַחֲלָה (nakhalah) likely stands by metonymy for the crops that grow on Jacob’s “inheritance” (i.e., the land he inherited as a result of God’s promise).

6 tn Heb “for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.” The introductory כִּי (ki) may be asseverative (as reflected in the translation) or causal/explanatory, explaining why the preceding promise will become reality (because it is guaranteed by the divine word).

7 tn Heb “instead of your shame, a double portion.”

8 tn Heb “and [instead of] humiliation they will rejoice [over] their portion.” The term תָחָת (takhat, “instead of”) is understood by ellipsis (note the preceding line).

9 tn Heb “therefore” (so KJV, NASB); NIV “and so.”

10 tn Heb “from the good of the heart.”

11 tn Heb “from the pain of the heart.”

12 tn Heb “from the breaking of the spirit.”
