Isaiah 14:18

Context

14:18 1 As for all the kings of the nations,

all of them 2  lie down in splendor, 3

each in his own tomb. 4

Isaiah 19:2

Context

19:2 “I will provoke civil strife in Egypt, 5

brothers will fight with each other,

as will neighbors,

cities, and kingdoms. 6

Isaiah 33:2

Context

33:2 Lord, be merciful to us! We wait for you.

Give us strength each morning! 7

Deliver us when distress comes. 8

1 sn It is unclear where the quotation of the kings, begun in v. 10b, ends. However, the reference to the “kings of the nations” in v. 18 (see also v. 9) seems to indicate that the quotation has ended at this point and that Israel’s direct taunt (cf. vv. 4b-10a) has resumed. In fact the references to the “kings of the nations” may form a stylistic inclusio or frame around the quotation.

2 tc The phrase “all of them” does not appear in the Qumran scroll 1QIsaa.

3 sn This refers to the typically extravagant burial of kings.

4 tn Heb “house” (so KJV, ASV), but in this context a tomb is in view. Note the verb “lie down” in the preceding line and the reference to a “grave” in the next line.

5 tn Heb I will provoke Egypt against Egypt” (NAB similar).

6 tn Heb “and they will fight, a man against his brother, and a man against his neighbor, city against city, kingdom against kingdom.” Civil strife will extend all the way from the domestic level to the provincial arena.

7 tn Heb “Be their arm each morning.” “Arm” is a symbol for strength. The mem suffixed to the noun has been traditionally understood as a third person suffix, but this is contrary to the context, where the people speak of themselves in the first person. The mem (מ) is probably enclitic with ellipsis of the pronoun, which can be supplied from the context. See J. N. Oswalt, Isaiah (NICOT), 1:589, n. 1.

8 tn Heb “[Be] also our deliverance in the time of distress.”
