to the remote slopes of the pit. 2

Isaiah 22:7

Context

22:7 Your very best valleys were full of chariots; 3

horsemen confidently took their positions 4  at the gate.

Isaiah 33:4

Context

33:4 Your plunder 5  disappears as if locusts were eating it; 6

they swarm over it like locusts! 7

1 tn The prefixed verb form is taken as a preterite. Note the use of perfects in v. 12 to describe the king’s downfall.

2 tn The Hebrew term בּוּר (bor, “cistern”) is sometimes used metaphorically to refer to the place of the dead or the entrance to the underworld.

3 tn The verb that introduces this verse serves as a discourse particle and is untranslated; see note on “in the future” in 2:2.

4 tn Heb “taking a stand, take their stand.” The infinitive absolute emphasizes the following finite verb. The translation attempts to bring out this emphasis with the adverb “confidently.”

5 tn The pronoun is plural; the statement is addressed to the nations who have stockpiled plunder from their conquests of others.

6 tn Heb “and your plunder is gathered, the gathering of the locust.”

7 tn Heb “like a swarm of locusts swarming on it.”
