Isaiah 14:11

Context

14:11 Your splendor 1  has been brought down to Sheol,

as well as the sound of your stringed instruments. 2

You lie on a bed of maggots,

with a blanket of worms over you. 3

Isaiah 19:11

Context

19:11 The officials of Zoan are nothing but fools; 4

Pharaoh’s wise advisers give stupid advice.

How dare you say to Pharaoh,

“I am one of the sages,

one well-versed in the writings of the ancient kings?” 5

Isaiah 19:19

Context
19:19 At that time there will be an altar for the Lord in the middle of the land of Egypt, as well as a sacred pillar 6  dedicated to the Lord at its border.

Isaiah 56:12

Context

56:12 Each one says, 7

‘Come on, I’ll get some wine!

Let’s guzzle some beer!

Tomorrow will be just like today!

We’ll have everything we want!’ 8

Isaiah 58:11

Context

58:11 The Lord will continually lead you;

he will feed you even in parched regions. 9

He will give you renewed strength, 10

and you will be like a well-watered garden,

like a spring that continually produces water.

Isaiah 59:12

Context

59:12 For you are aware of our many rebellious deeds, 11

and our sins testify against us;

indeed, we are aware of our rebellious deeds;

we know our sins all too well. 12

1 tn Or “pride” (NCV, CEV); KJV, NIV, NRSV “pomp.”

2 tn Or “harps” (NAB, NIV, NRSV).

3 tn Heb “under you maggots are spread out, and worms are your cover.”

4 tn Or “certainly the officials of Zoan are fools.” אַךְ (’akh) can carry the sense, “only, nothing but,” or “certainly, surely.”

5 tn Heb “A son of wise men am I, a son of ancient kings.” The term בֶּן (ben, “son of”) could refer to literal descent, but many understand the word, at least in the first line, in its idiomatic sense of “member [of a guild].” See HALOT 138 s.v. בֶּן and J. N. Oswalt, Isaiah (NICOT), 1:371. If this is the case, then one can take the word in a figurative sense in the second line as well, the “son of ancient kings” being one devoted to their memory as preserved in their literature.

6 tn This word is sometimes used of a sacred pillar associated with pagan worship, but here it is associated with the worship of the Lord.

7 tn The words “each one says” are supplied in the translation for clarification.

8 tn Heb “great, [in] abundance, very much,” i.e., “very great indeed.” See HALOT 452 s.v. יֶתֶר.

9 tn Heb “he will satisfy in parched regions your appetite.”

10 tn Heb “and your bones he will strengthen.”

11 tn Heb “for many are our rebellious deeds before you.”

12 tn Heb “indeed [or “for”] our rebellious deeds (are) with us, and our sins, we know them.”
