Isaiah 13:4

Context

13:4 1 There is a loud noise on the mountains –

it sounds like a large army! 2

There is great commotion among the kingdoms 3

nations are being assembled!

The Lord who commands armies is mustering

forces for battle.

Isaiah 29:6

Context

29:6 Judgment will come from the Lord who commands armies, 4

accompanied by thunder, earthquake, and a loud noise,

by a strong gale, a windstorm, and a consuming flame of fire.

1 sn In vv. 4-10 the prophet appears to be speaking, since the Lord is referred to in the third person. However, since the Lord refers to himself in the third person later in this chapter (see v. 13), it is possible that he speaks throughout the chapter.

2 tn Heb “a sound, a roar [is] on the mountains, like many people.”

3 tn Heb “a sound, tumult of kingdoms.”

4 tn Heb “from the Lord who commands armies [traditionally, the Lord of hosts] there will be visitation.” The third feminine singular passive verb form תִּפָּקֵד (tippaqed, “she/it will be visited”) is used here in an impersonal sense. See GKC 459 §144.b.
