Isaiah 13:4

Context

13:4 1 There is a loud noise on the mountains –

it sounds like a large army! 2

There is great commotion among the kingdoms 3

nations are being assembled!

The Lord who commands armies is mustering

forces for battle.

Isaiah 18:3

Context

18:3 All you who live in the world,

who reside on the earth,

you will see a signal flag raised on the mountains;

you will hear a trumpet being blown.

Isaiah 31:3

Context

31:3 The Egyptians are mere humans, not God;

their horses are made of flesh, not spirit.

The Lord will strike with 4  his hand;

the one who helps will stumble

and the one being helped will fall.

Together they will perish. 5

Isaiah 41:20

Context

41:20 I will do this so 6  people 7  will observe and recognize,

so they will pay attention and understand

that the Lord’s power 8  has accomplished this,

and that the Holy One of Israel has brought it into being.” 9

1 sn In vv. 4-10 the prophet appears to be speaking, since the Lord is referred to in the third person. However, since the Lord refers to himself in the third person later in this chapter (see v. 13), it is possible that he speaks throughout the chapter.

2 tn Heb “a sound, a roar [is] on the mountains, like many people.”

3 tn Heb “a sound, tumult of kingdoms.”

4 tn Heb “will extend”; KJV, ASV, NASB, NCV “stretch out.”

5 tn Heb “together all of them will come to an end.”

6 tn The words “I will do this” are supplied in the translation for clarification. The Hebrew text has here simply, “in order that.”

7 tn Heb “they”; NAB, NRSV “that all may see”; CEV, NLT “Everyone will see.”

8 tn Heb “hand” (so KJV, NASB, NIV, NRSV).

9 tn Or “created it” (KJV, NAB, NASB, NIV, NRSV); TEV “has made it happen.”
