Isaiah 1:6

Context

1:6 From the soles of your feet to your head,

there is no spot that is unharmed. 1

There are only bruises, cuts,

and open wounds.

They have not been cleansed 2  or bandaged,

nor have they been treated 3  with olive oil. 4

Isaiah 5:8

Context
Disaster is Coming

5:8 Those who accumulate houses are as good as dead, 5

those who also accumulate landed property 6

until there is no land left, 7

and you are the only landowners remaining within the land. 8

Isaiah 10:22

Context
10:22 For though your people, Israel, are as numerous as 9  the sand on the seashore, only a remnant will come back. 10  Destruction has been decreed; 11  just punishment 12  is about to engulf you. 13

Isaiah 37:19

Context
37:19 They have burned the gods of the nations, 14  for they are not really gods, but only the product of human hands manufactured from wood and stone. That is why the Assyrians could destroy them. 15

Isaiah 59:9

Context
Israel Confesses its Sin

59:9 For this reason deliverance 16  is far from us 17

and salvation does not reach us.

We wait for light, 18  but see only darkness; 19

we wait for 20  a bright light, 21  but live 22  in deep darkness. 23

1 tn Heb “there is not in it health”; NAB “there is no sound spot.”

2 tn Heb “pressed out.”

3 tn Heb “softened” (so NASB, NRSV); NIV “soothed.”

4 sn This verse describes wounds like those one would receive in battle. These wounds are comprehensive and without remedy.

5 tn Heb “Woe [to] those who make a house touch a house.” The exclamation הוֹי (hoy, “woe, ah”) was used in funeral laments (see 1 Kgs 13:30; Jer 22:18; 34:5) and carries the connotation of death.

6 tn Heb “[who] bring a field near a field.”

sn This verse does not condemn real estate endeavors per se, but refers to the way in which the rich bureaucrats of Judah accumulated property by exploiting the poor, in violation of the covenantal principle that the land belonged to God and that every family was to have its own portion of land. See the note at 1:23.

7 tn Heb “until the end of the place”; NASB “until there is no more room.”

8 tn Heb “and you are made to dwell alone in the midst of the land.”

9 tn Heb “are like.”

10 sn The twofold appearance of the statement “a remnant will come back” (שְׁאָר יָשׁוּב, shear yashuv) in vv. 21-22 echoes and probably plays off the name of Isaiah’s son Shear-jashub (see 7:3). In its original context the name was meant to encourage Ahaz (see the note at 7:3), but here it has taken on new dimensions. In light of Ahaz’s failure and the judgment it brings down on the land, the name Shear-jashub now foreshadows the destiny of the nation. According to vv. 21-22, there is good news and bad news. The good news is that a remnant of God’s people will return; the bad news is that only a remnant will be preserved and come back. Like the name Immanuel, this name foreshadows both judgment (see the notes at 7:25 and 8:8) and ultimate restoration (see the note at 8:10).

11 tn Or “predetermined”; cf. ASV, NASB “is determined”; TEV “is in store.”

12 tn צְדָקָה (tsÿdaqah) often means “righteousness,” but here it refers to God’s just judgment.

13 tn Or “is about to overflow.”

14 tn Heb “and they put their gods in the fire.”

15 tn Heb “so they destroyed them” (NASB similar).

16 tn מִשְׁפָּט (mishpat), which refers to “justice” in the earlier verses, here refers to “justice from God,” or “vindication.” Because the people are unjust, God refuses to vindicate them before their enemies. See v. 11.

17 sn The prophet speaks on behalf of the sinful nation and confesses its sins.

18 sn Light here symbolizes prosperity and blessing.

19 tn Heb “but, look, darkness”; NIV “but all is darkness.”

20 tn The words “we wait for” are supplied in the translation; the verb is understood by ellipsis (note the preceding line).

21 tn The plural noun form may indicate degree here.

22 tn Or “walk about”; NCV “all we have is darkness.”

23 tn The plural noun form may indicate degree here.
