Isaiah 1:24

Context

1:24 Therefore, the sovereign Lord who commands armies, 1 

the powerful ruler of Israel, 2  says this:

“Ah, I will seek vengeance 3  against my adversaries,

I will take revenge against my enemies. 4 

Isaiah 6:5

Context

6:5 I said, “Too bad for me! I am destroyed, 5  for my lips are contaminated by sin, 6  and I live among people whose lips are contaminated by sin. 7  My eyes have seen the king, the Lord who commands armies.” 8

45:4 For the sake of my servant Jacob,

Israel, my chosen one,

I call you by name

and give you a title of respect, even though you do not recognize 20  me.

Isaiah 47:6

Context

47:6 I was angry at my people;

I defiled my special possession

and handed them over to you.

You showed them no mercy; 21 

you even placed a very heavy burden on old people. 22 

Isaiah 49:22

Context

49:22 This is what the sovereign Lord says:

“Look I will raise my hand to the nations;

I will raise my signal flag to the peoples.

They will bring your sons in their arms

and carry your daughters on their shoulders.

Isaiah 52:5

Context

52:5 And now, what do we have here?” 23  says the Lord.

“Indeed my people have been carried away for nothing,

those who rule over them taunt,” 24  says the Lord,

“and my name is constantly slandered 25  all day long.

Isaiah 54:10

54:10 Even if the mountains are removed

and the hills displaced,

my devotion will not be removed from you,

nor will my covenant of friendship 26  be displaced,”

says the Lord, the one who has compassion on you.

Isaiah 56:5

56:5 I will set up within my temple and my walls a monument 27 

that will be better than sons and daughters.

I will set up a permanent monument 28  for them that will remain.

Isaiah 60:7

Context

60:7 All the sheep of Kedar will be gathered to you;

the rams of Nebaioth will be available to you as sacrifices. 29 

They will go up on my altar acceptably, 30 

and I will bestow honor on my majestic temple.

Isaiah 60:10

Context

60:10 Foreigners will rebuild your walls;

their kings will serve you.

Even though I struck you down in my anger,

I will restore my favor and have compassion on you. 31 

Isaiah 60:21

60:21 All of your people will be godly; 32 

they will possess the land permanently.

I will plant them like a shoot;

they will be the product of my labor,

through whom I reveal my splendor. 33 

Isaiah 63:5

63:5 I looked, but there was no one to help;

I was shocked because there was no one offering support. 34 

So my right arm accomplished deliverance;

my raging anger drove me on. 35 

Isaiah 66:1

66:1 This is what the Lord says:

“The heavens are my throne

and the earth is my footstool.

Where then is the house you will build for me?

Where is the place where I will rest?

1 tn Heb “the master, the Lord who commands armies [traditionally, the Lord of hosts].” On the title “the Lord who commands armies,” see the note at v. 9.

2 tn Heb “the powerful [one] of Israel.”

3 tn Heb “console myself” (i.e., by getting revenge); NRSV “pour out my wrath on.”

4 sn The Lord here identifies with the oppressed and comes as their defender and vindicator.

5 tn Isaiah uses the suffixed (perfect) form of the verb for rhetorical purposes. In this way his destruction is described as occurring or as already completed. Rather than understanding the verb as derived from דָּמַה (damah, “be destroyed”), some take it from a proposed homonymic root דמה, which would mean “be silent.” In this case, one might translate, “I must be silent.”

6 tn Heb “a man unclean of lips am I.” Isaiah is not qualified to praise the king. His lips (the instruments of praise) are “unclean” because he has been contaminated by sin.

7 tn Heb “and among a nation unclean of lips I live.”

8 tn Perhaps in this context, the title has a less militaristic connotation and pictures the Lord as the ruler of the heavenly assembly. See the note at 1:9.

10 sn The child’s name foreshadows what will happen to Judah’s enemies; when their defeat takes place, the child will be a reminder that God predicted the event and brought it to pass. As such the child will be a reminder of God’s protective presence with his people.

11 tn Heb “removed the borders of nations”; cf. NAB, NIV, NRSV “boundaries.”

12 tc The consonantal text (Kethib) has כְּאַבִּיר (kÿabir, “like a strong one”); the marginal reading (Qere) is כַּבִיר (kavir, “mighty one”).

13 tn Heb “and I brought down, like a strong one, ones sitting [or “living”].” The participle יוֹשְׁבִים (yoshÿvim, “ones sitting”) could refer to the inhabitants of the nations, but the translation assumes that it refers to those who sit on thrones, i.e., rulers. See BDB 442 s.v. יָשַׁב and HALOT 444 s.v. ישׁב.

14 tn Heb “my way is hidden from the Lord” (so NAB, NASB, NIV, NRSV).

15 tn Heb “and from my God my justice passes away”; NRSV “my right is disregarded by my God.”

Consequently, the form should be emended to לְרָצוֹן (lÿratson, “acceptably”; see BDB 953 s.v. רָצוֹן). However, the Qumran scroll 1QIsaa has both לרצון followed by the preposition על, which would argue against deleted the preposition. As the above translation seeks to demonstrate, the preposition עַל (’al) indicates a norm (“in accordance with acceptance” or “acceptably”; IBHS 218 §11.2.13e, n. 111) and the “altar” functions as an objective accusative with a verb of motion (cf. Gen 49:4; Lev 2:2; Num 13:17; J. N. Oswalt, Isaiah [NICOT], 2:534, n. 14).
