Genesis 41:35

41:35 They should gather all the excess food 9  during these good years that are coming. By Pharaoh’s authority 10  they should store up grain so the cities will have food, 11  and they should preserve it. 12

1 tn Heb “and fear of you and dread of you will be upon every living creature of the earth and upon every bird of the sky.” The suffixes on the nouns “fear” and “dread” are objective genitives. The animals will fear humans from this time forward.

2 tn Heb “into your hand are given.” The “hand” signifies power. To say the animals have been given into the hands of humans means humans have been given authority over them.

3 tn The clause is introduced with the particle הִנֵּה (hinneh), introducing a foundational clause for the coming imperative: “since…do.”

4 tn Heb “in your hand.”

5 tn Heb “what is good in your eyes.”

6 tn Heb “her”; the referent (Hagar) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

7 tn In the Piel stem the verb עָנָה (’anah) means “to afflict, to oppress, to treat harshly, to mistreat.”

8 tn Heb “and she fled from her presence.” The referent of “her” (Sarai) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

9 tn Heb “all the food.”

10 tn Heb “under the hand of Pharaoh.”

11 tn Heb “[for] food in the cities.” The noun translated “food” is an adverbial accusative in the sentence.

12 tn The perfect with vav (ו) consecutive carries the same force as the sequence of jussives before it.
