Genesis 46:30

Context

46:30 Israel said to Joseph, “Now let me die since I have seen your face and know that you are still alive.” 6

1 tn Or “seven pairs” (cf. NRSV).

2 tn Here (and in v. 9) the Hebrew text uses the normal generic terms for “male and female” (זָכָר וּנְקֵבָה, zakhar unÿqevah).

3 tn Heb “to keep alive offspring.”

4 tn The infinitive absolute with the finite verb stresses the point. The primary meaning of the verb is “to witness; to testify.” It alludes to Joseph’s oath, which was tantamount to a threat or warning.

5 tn The idiom “see my face” means “have an audience with me.”

6 tn Heb “after my seeing your face that you are still alive.”
