Genesis 41:49

Context
41:49 Joseph stored up a vast amount of grain, like the sand of the sea, 9  until he stopped measuring it because it was impossible to measure.

1 tn Heb “to keep alive.”

2 tn Or “seven pairs” (cf. NRSV).

3 sn For a study of the Levitical terminology of “clean” and “unclean,” see L. E. Toombs, IDB 1:643.

4 tn Heb “a male and his female” (also a second time at the end of this verse). The terms used here for male and female animals (אִישׁ, ’ish) and אִשָּׁה, ’ishah) normally refer to humans.

5 tn Heb “he”; the referent (Abraham) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

6 tn The construction is a verbal hendiadys – the preterite (“he added”) is combined with an adverb “yet” and an infinitive “to speak.”

7 tn Heb “he”; the referent (Abraham) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

8 tn Heb “and also.”

9 tn Heb “and Joseph gathered grain like the sand of the sea, multiplying much.” To emphasize the vast amount of grain he stored up, the Hebrew text modifies the verb “gathered” with an infinitive absolute and an adverb.
