1 tn Heb “And it happened at the end of days.” The clause indicates the passing of a set period of time leading up to offering sacrifices.

2 tn The Hebrew term מִנְחָה (minkhah, “offering”) is a general word for tribute, a gift, or an offering. It is the main word used in Lev 2 for the dedication offering. This type of offering could be comprised of vegetables. The content of the offering (vegetables, as opposed to animals) was not the critical issue, but rather the attitude of the offerer.

3 tn The word “again” is not in the Hebrew text, but is supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons.

4 tn Heb “it did not again return to him still.” For a study of this section of the flood narrative, see W. O. E. Oesterley, “The Dove with the Olive Leaf (Gen VIII 8–11),” ExpTim 18 (1906/07): 377-78.

5 tn The sentence begins with the temporal indicator וַיְהִי (vayÿhi) followed by “in the days of.”

6 sn Shinar (also in v. 9) is the region of Babylonia.

7 tn Or “king of Goyim.” The Hebrew term גּוֹיִם (goyim) means “nations,” but a number of modern translations merely transliterate the Hebrew (cf. NEB “Goyim”; NIV, NRSV “Goiim”).

8 sn The Hebrew verb used here means “to test; to try; to prove.” In this passage God tests Abraham to see if he would be obedient. See T. W. Mann, The Book of the Torah, 44-48. See also J. L. 9 tn Heb “he”; the referent (Abraham) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

12 tn Heb “and she bore for Jacob a fifth son,” i.e., this was the fifth son that Leah had given Jacob.

13 tn Heb “and forty days were fulfilled for him, for thus are fulfilled the days of embalming.”

15 sn Seventy days. This probably refers to a time of national mourning.
