Genesis 34:21

Context
34:21 “These men are at peace with us. So let them live in the land and travel freely in it, for the land is wide enough 1  for them. We will take their daughters for wives, and we will give them our daughters to marry. 2

Genesis 42:7

Context
42:7 When Joseph saw his brothers, he recognized them, but he pretended to be a stranger 3  to them and spoke to them harshly. He asked, “Where do you come from?” They answered, 4  “From the land of Canaan, to buy grain for food.” 5

Genesis 47:17

Context
47:17 So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and Joseph gave them food in exchange for their horses, the livestock of their flocks and herds, and their donkeys. 6  He got them through that year by giving them food in exchange for livestock.

1 tn Heb “wide on both hands,” that is, in both directions.

2 tn The words “to marry” are not in the Hebrew text, but are supplied in the translation for clarity.

3 sn But pretended to be a stranger. Joseph intends to test his brothers to see if they have changed and have the integrity to be patriarchs of the tribes of Israel. He will do this by putting them in the same situations that they and he were in before. The first test will be to awaken their conscience.

4 tn Heb “said.”

5 tn The verb is denominative, meaning “to buy grain”; the word “food” could simply be the direct object, but may also be an adverbial accusative.

6 tn The definite article is translated here as a possessive pronoun.
