Genesis 38:3-4

38:3 She became pregnant 8  and had a son. Judah named 9  him Er. 38:4 She became pregnant again and had another son, whom she named Onan.

2 tn Heb “and she bore for Jacob a son.”

3 tn Heb “entered to.” See the note on the same expression in v. 2.

4 tn Or “she conceived” (also in v. 5)

5 tn Heb “and she saw that she was pregnant and her mistress was despised in her eyes.” The Hebrew verb קָלַל (qalal) means “to despise, to treat lightly, to treat with contempt.” In Hagar’s opinion Sarai had been demoted.

6 tn Heb “and she became pregnant again and Bilhah, the servant of Rachel, bore a second son for Jacob.”

7 tn Heb “and she bore a sixth son for Jacob,” i.e., this was the sixth son that Leah had given Jacob.

8 tn Or “she conceived” (also in the following verse).

9 tc Some mss read this verb as feminine, “she called,” to match the pattern of the next two verses. But the MT, “he called,” should probably be retained as the more difficult reading.

tn Heb “and he called his name.” The referent (Judah) has been specified in the translation for clarity.
