Genesis 3:3

3:3 but concerning the fruit of the tree that is in the middle of the orchard God said, ‘You must not eat from it, and you must not touch it, 1  or else you will die.’” 2

6:16 Make a roof for the ark and finish it, leaving 18 inches 3  from the top. 4  Put a door in the side of the ark, and make lower, middle, and upper decks.

Genesis 29:7

29:7 Then Jacob 5  said, “Since it is still the middle of the day, 6  it is not time for the flocks to be gathered. You should water the sheep and then go and let them graze some more.” 7 

Genesis 37:7

Context
37:7 There we were, 8  binding sheaves of grain in the middle of the field. Suddenly my sheaf rose up and stood upright and your sheaves surrounded my sheaf and bowed down 9  to it!”

1 sn And you must not touch it. The woman adds to God’s prohibition, making it say more than God expressed. G. von Rad observes that it is as though she wanted to set a law for herself by means of this exaggeration (Genesis [OTL], 86).

2 tn The Hebrew construction is פֶּן (pen) with the imperfect tense, which conveys a negative purpose: “lest you die” = “in order that you not die.” By stating the warning in this way, the woman omits the emphatic infinitive used by God (“you shall surely die,” see 2:17).

3 tn Heb “a cubit.”

4 tn Heb “to a cubit you shall finish it from above.” The idea is that Noah was to leave an 18-inch opening from the top for a window for light.

5 tn Heb “and he”; the referent (Jacob) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

6 tn Heb “the day is great.”

7 tn Heb “water the sheep and go and pasture [them].” The verbal forms are imperatives, but Jacob would hardly be giving direct orders to someone else’s shepherds. The nuance here is probably one of advice.

8 tn All three clauses in this dream report begin with וְהִנֵּה (vÿhinneh, “and look”), which lends vividness to the report. This is represented in the translation by the expression “there we were.”

9 tn The verb means “to bow down to the ground.” It is used to describe worship and obeisance to masters.
