Genesis 46:10

Context

46:10 The sons of Simeon:

Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jakin, Zohar,

and Shaul (the son of a Canaanite woman).

1 tn There is a notable change between what the Lord God had said and what the woman says. God said “you may freely eat” (the imperfect with the infinitive absolute, see 2:16), but the woman omits the emphatic infinitive, saying simply “we may eat.” Her words do not reflect the sense of eating to her heart’s content.

2 tn Heb “drew near to enter.”

3 tn The particle הִנֵּה (hinneh, “look”) is deictic here; it draws attention to the following fact.

4 tn Heb “a woman beautiful of appearance are you.”

5 tn The imperfect is used here in a modal sense to indicate desire.

6 tn Heb “after me.”

7 tn Heb “you must not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan.”
