Genesis 29:7

Context
29:7 Then Jacob 1  said, “Since it is still the middle of the day, 2  it is not time for the flocks to be gathered. You should water the sheep and then go and let them graze some more.” 3

Genesis 34:25

Context
34:25 In three days, when they were still in pain, two of Jacob’s sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brothers, each took his sword 4  and went to the unsuspecting city 5  and slaughtered every male.

1 tn Heb “and he”; the referent (Jacob) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

2 tn Heb “the day is great.”

3 tn Heb “water the sheep and go and pasture [them].” The verbal forms are imperatives, but Jacob would hardly be giving direct orders to someone else’s shepherds. The nuance here is probably one of advice.

4 tn Heb “a man his sword.”

5 tn Heb “and they came upon the city, [which was] secure.” In this case “secure” means the city was caught unprepared and at peace, not expecting an attack.
