Genesis 29:20

Context
29:20 So Jacob worked for seven years to acquire Rachel. 1  But they seemed like only a few days to him 2  because his love for her was so great. 3

Genesis 34:10

Context
34:10 You may live 4  among us, and the land will be open to you. 5  Live in it, travel freely in it, 6  and acquire property in it.”

1 tn Heb “in exchange for Rachel.”

2 sn But they seemed like only a few days to him. This need not mean that the time passed quickly. More likely it means that the price seemed insignificant when compared to what he was getting in the bargain.

3 tn Heb “because of his love for her.” The words “was so great” are supplied for stylistic reasons.

4 tn The imperfect verbal form has a permissive nuance here.

5 tn Heb “before you.”

6 tn The verb seems to carry the basic meaning “travel about freely,” although the substantival participial form refers to a trader (see E. A. Speiser, “The Verb sh£r in Genesis and Early Hebrew Movements,” BASOR 164 [1961]: 23-28); cf. NIV, NRSV “trade in it.”
