Genesis 42:1

Context
Joseph’s Brothers in Egypt

42:1 When Jacob heard 10  there was grain in Egypt, he 11  said to his sons, “Why are you looking at each other?” 12

1 tn Heb “him”; the referent (Joseph) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

2 sn From their hands. The instigators of this plot may have been the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah (see v. 2).

3 tn Heb “and he said.”

4 tn Heb “we must not strike him down [with respect to] life.”

5 tn Heb “that I raised.”

6 tn Heb “and when his master heard the words of his wife which she spoke to him, saying.”

7 tn Heb “according to these words.”

8 tn Heb “did to me.”

9 tn Heb “his anger burned.”

10 tn Heb “saw.”

11 tn Heb “Jacob.” Here the proper name has been replaced by the pronoun (“he”) in the translation for stylistic reasons.

12 sn Why are you looking at each other? The point of Jacob’s question is that his sons should be going to get grain rather than sitting around doing nothing. Jacob, as the patriarch, still makes the decisions for the whole clan.
