Genesis 24:3

Context
24:3 so that I may make you solemnly promise 1  by the Lord, the God of heaven and the God of the earth: You must not acquire 2  a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I am living.

Genesis 24:40

Context
24:40 He answered, ‘The Lord, before whom I have walked, 3  will send his angel with you. He will make your journey a success and you will find a wife for my son from among my relatives, from my father’s family.

Genesis 47:6

Context
47:6 The land of Egypt is before you; settle your father and your brothers in the best region of the land. They may live in the land of Goshen. If you know of any highly capable men 4  among them, put them in charge 5  of my livestock.”

1 tn Following the imperative, the cohortative with the prefixed conjunction indicates purpose.

2 tn Heb “because you must not take.”

3 tn The verb is the Hitpael of הָלַךְ (halakh), meaning “live one’s life” (see Gen 17:1). The statement may simply refer to serving the Lord or it may have a more positive moral connotation (“serve faithfully”).

4 tn Heb “men of skill.”

5 tn Heb “make them rulers.”

sn Put them in charge of my livestock. Pharaoh is, in effect, offering Joseph’s brothers jobs as royal keepers of livestock, a position mentioned often in Egyptian inscriptions, because the Pharaohs owned huge herds of cattle.
