Genesis 46:1

Context
The Family of Jacob goes to Egypt

1 tn Heb “on/in the seventh day.”

2 tn Heb “his work which he did [or “made”].”

3 tn The Hebrew term שָׁבַּת (shabbat) can be translated “to rest” (“and he rested”) but it basically means “to cease.” This is not a rest from exhaustion; it is the cessation of the work of creation.

4 tn Heb “and he turned to them and spoke to them.”

5 tn Heb “took Simeon.” This was probably done at Joseph’s command, however; the grand vizier of Egypt would not have personally seized a prisoner.

6 tn Heb “and he bound him.” See the note on the preceding verb “taken.”

7 tn Heb “concerning peace.”

8 tn Heb “and Israel journeyed, and all that was his.”

9 sn Beer Sheba. See Gen 21:31; 28:10.
