Genesis 37:21

Context

37:21 When Reuben heard this, he rescued Joseph 5  from their hands, 6  saying, 7  “Let’s not take his life!” 8

1 tn The imperative after the jussive indicates purpose here.

2 tn The word “all” has been supplied in the translation because the Hebrew verb translated “wash” and the pronominal suffix on the word “feet” are plural, referring to all three of the visitors.

3 tn Heb “and he”; the referent (Esau) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

4 tn Heb “let us travel and let us go.” The two cohortatives are used in combination with the sense, “let’s travel along, get going, be on our way.”

5 tn Heb “him”; the referent (Joseph) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

6 sn From their hands. The instigators of this plot may have been the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah (see v. 2).

7 tn Heb “and he said.”

8 tn Heb “we must not strike him down [with respect to] life.”
