Context18:32 Finally Abraham 1 said, “May the Lord not be angry so that I may speak just once more. What if ten are found there?” He replied, “I will not destroy it for the sake of the ten.”
Genesis 20:6
Context20:6 Then in the dream God replied to him, “Yes, I know that you have done this with a clear conscience. 2 That is why I have kept you 3 from sinning against me and why 4 I did not allow you to touch her.
Genesis 21:16
Context21:16 Then she went and sat down by herself across from him at quite a distance, about a bowshot 5 away; for she thought, 6 “I refuse to watch the child die.” 7 So she sat across from him and wept uncontrollably. 8
1 tn Heb “he”; the referent (Abraham) has been specified in the translation for clarity.
2 tn Heb “with the integrity of your heart.”
3 tn Heb “and I, even I, kept you.”
4 tn Heb “therefore.”
5 sn A bowshot would be a distance of about a hundred yards (ninety meters).
6 tn Heb “said.”
7 tn Heb “I will not look on the death of the child.” The cohortative verbal form (note the negative particle אַל,’al) here expresses her resolve to avoid the stated action.
8 tn Heb “and she lifted up her voice and wept” (that is, she wept uncontrollably). The LXX reads “he” (referring to Ishmael) rather than “she” (referring to Hagar), but this is probably an attempt to harmonize this verse with the following one, which refers to the boy’s cries.
