Genesis 18:21

Context
18:21 that I must go down 1  and see if they are as wicked as the outcry suggests. 2  If not, 3  I want to know.”

Genesis 24:49

Context
24:49 Now, if you will show faithful love to my master, tell me. But if not, tell me as well, so that I may go on my way.” 4

Genesis 31:50

Context
31:50 If you mistreat my daughters or if you take wives besides my daughters, although no one else is with us, realize 5  that God is witness to your actions.” 6

1 tn The cohortative indicates the Lord’s resolve.

sn I must go down. The descent to “see” Sodom is a bold anthropomorphism, stressing the careful judgment of God. The language is reminiscent of the Lord going down to see the Tower of Babel in Gen 11:1-9.

2 tn Heb “[if] according to the outcry that has come to me they have done completely.” Even the Lord, who is well aware of the human capacity to sin, finds it hard to believe that anyone could be as bad as the “outcry” against Sodom and Gomorrah suggests.

3 sn The short phrase if not provides a ray of hope and inspires Abraham’s intercession.

4 tn Heb “and I will turn to the right or to the left.” The expression apparently means that Abraham’s servant will know where he should go if there is no further business here.

5 tn Heb “see.”

6 tn Heb “between me and you.”
