Genesis 16:14

Context
16:14 That is why the well was called 1  Beer Lahai Roi. 2  (It is located 3  between Kadesh and Bered.)

Genesis 17:2

Context
17:2 Then I will confirm my covenant 4  between me and you, and I will give you a multitude of descendants.” 5

Genesis 17:11

Context
17:11 You must circumcise the flesh of your foreskins. This will be a reminder 6  of the covenant between me and you.

1 tn The verb does not have an expressed subject and so is rendered as passive in the translation.

2 sn The Hebrew name Beer Lahai Roi (בְּאֵר לַחַי רֹאִי, bÿer lakhay roi) means “The well of the Living One who sees me.” The text suggests that God takes up the cause of those who are oppressed.

3 tn Heb “look.” The words “it is located” are supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons.

4 tn Following the imperative, the cohortative indicates consequence. If Abram is blameless, then the Lord will ratify the covenant. Earlier the Lord ratified part of his promise to Abram (see Gen 15:18-21), guaranteeing him that his descendants would live in the land. But the expanded form of the promise, which includes numerous descendants and eternal possession of the land, remains to be ratified. This expanded form of the promise is in view here (see vv. 2b, 4-8). See the note at Gen 15:18 and R. B. Chisholm, “Evidence from Genesis,” A Case for Premillennialism, 35-54.

5 tn Heb “I will multiply you exceedingly, exceedingly.” The repetition is emphatic.

6 tn Or “sign.”
