Genesis 24:31

Context
24:31 Laban said to him, 3  “Come, you who are blessed by the Lord! 4  Why are you standing out here when I have prepared 5  the house and a place for the camels?”

Genesis 24:42

Context
24:42 When I came to the spring today, I prayed, ‘O Lord, God of my master Abraham, if you have decided to make my journey successful, 6  may events unfold as follows: 7

1 tn Heb “God of my seeing.” The pronominal suffix may be understood either as objective (“who sees me,” as in the translation) or subjective (“whom I see”).

2 tn Heb “after one who sees me.”

sn For a discussion of Hagar’s exclamation, see T. Booij, “Hagar’s Words in Genesis 16:13b,” VT 30 (1980): 1-7.

3 tn Heb “and he said.” The referent (Laban) has been specified and the words “to him” supplied in the translation for clarity.

4 sn Laban’s obsession with wealth is apparent; to him it represents how one is blessed by the Lord. Already the author is laying the foundation for subsequent events in the narrative, where Laban’s greed becomes his dominant characteristic.

5 tn The disjunctive clause is circumstantial.

6 tn Heb “if you are making successful my way on which I am going.”

7 tn The words “may events unfold as follows” are supplied in the translation for clarification and for stylistic reasons.
