Context
14:3 These last five kings 1  joined forces 2  in the Valley of Siddim (that is, the Salt Sea). 3

Genesis 19:26

Context
19:26 But Lot’s 4  wife looked back longingly 5  and was turned into a pillar of salt.

1 tn Heb “all these,” referring only to the last five kings named. The referent has been specified as “these last five kings” in the translation for clarity.

2 tn The Hebrew verb used here means “to join together; to unite; to be allied.” It stresses close associations, especially of friendships, marriages, or treaties.

3 sn The Salt Sea is the older name for the Dead Sea.

4 tn Heb “his”; the referent (Lot) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

5 tn The Hebrew verb means “to look intently; to gaze” (see 15:5).

sn Longingly. Lot’s wife apparently identified with the doomed city and thereby showed lack of respect for God’s provision of salvation. She, like her daughters later, had allowed her thinking to be influenced by the culture of Sodom.
