Genesis 12:5

Context
12:5 And Abram took his wife Sarai, his nephew 1  Lot, and all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired 2  in Haran, and they left for 3  the land of Canaan. They entered the land of Canaan.

Genesis 30:26

Context
30:26 Let me take my wives and my children whom I have acquired by working for you. 4  Then I’ll depart, 5  because you know how hard I’ve worked for you.” 6

Genesis 31:18

Context
31:18 He took 7  away all the livestock he had acquired in Paddan Aram and all his moveable property that he had accumulated. Then he set out toward the land of Canaan to return to his father Isaac. 8

1 tn Heb “the son of his brother.”

2 tn For the semantic nuance “acquire [property]” for the verb עָשָׂה (’asah), see BDB 795 s.v. עָשָׂה.

3 tn Heb “went out to go.”

4 tn Heb “give my wives and my children, for whom I have served you.” In one sense Laban had already “given” Jacob his two daughters as wives (Gen 29:21, 28). Here Jacob was asking for permission to take his own family along with him on the journey back to Canaan.

5 tn Following the imperative, the cohortative with the prefixed conjunction indicates purpose or result.

6 tn Heb “for you, you know my service [with] which I have served you.”

7 tn Heb “drove,” but this is subject to misunderstanding in contemporary English.

8 tn Heb “and he led away all his cattle and all his moveable property which he acquired, the cattle he obtained, which he acquired in Paddan Aram to go to Isaac his father to the land of Canaan.”
