Genesis 12:17

Context

12:17 But the Lord struck Pharaoh and his household with severe diseases 1  because of Sarai, Abram’s wife.

Genesis 41:57

Context
41:57 People from every country 2  came to Joseph in Egypt to buy grain because the famine was severe throughout the earth.

1 tn The cognate accusative adds emphasis to the verbal sentence: “he plagued with great plagues,” meaning the Lord inflicted numerous plagues, probably diseases (see Exod 15:26). The adjective “great” emphasizes that the plagues were severe and overwhelming.

2 tn Heb “all the earth,” which refers here (by metonymy) to the people of the earth. Note that the following verb is plural in form, indicating that the inhabitants of the earth are in view.
