  Creator of the stars of night, Thy people’s everlasting light, Jesu, Redeemer, save us all, And hear Thy servants when they call. Thou, grieving that the ancient curse Should doom to death a universe, Hast found the medicine, full of grace, To save and heal a ruined race. Thou cam’st, the Bridegroom of the bride, As drew the world to evening-tide; Proceeding from a virgin shrine, The spotless Victim all divine. At Whose dread Name, majestic now, All knees must bend, all hearts must bow; And things celestial Thee shall own, And things terrestrial, Lord alone. O Thou Whose coming is with dread To judge and doom the quick and dead, Preserve us, while we dwell below, From every insult of the foe. To God the Father, God the Son, And God the Spirit, Three in One, Laud, honor, might, and glory be From age to age eternally.

  The Maker of the sun and moon, The Maker of our earth, Lo! late in time, a fairer boon, Himself is brought to birth! How blest was all creation then, When God so gave increase; And Christ, to heal the hearts of men, Brought righteousness and peace! No star in all the heights of heaven But burned to see Him go; Yet unto earth alone was given His human form to know. His human form, by man denied, Took death for human sin: His endless love, through faith descried, Still lives the world to win. O perfect love, outpassing sight, O light beyond our ken, Come down through all the world tonight, And heal the hearts of men!

  Oh how fair that morning broke, When in Eden man awoke! Beast and bird and insect bright Reveled in the gladsome light; God looked down from Heav’n above, All was life and joy and love. Ah! the doleful change when sin Darkly, subtly entered in! War and pestilence and dearth Mar and sadden God’s fair earth; Human sorrow fills the air; Death is reigning everywhere. Yet rejoice; for God on high Hath not left His world to die! God’s dear Son, with dying breath, Broke the power of sin and death; Christ the Tempter overthrew, Christ is making all things new. Lord, in me be sin subdued, So may I with heart renewed, Fight the fight and run the race, Work in my appointed place, Waiting for the glad new birth Of Thy perfect Heav’n and earth.

  Six days of labor now are past; Thou restest, Holy God; And of Thy finished work has said, That all is very good. Yet while the seventh day is blessed, Hallowed for rest divine, Behold, a new creation needs That mighty power of Thine. Ten thousands voices praise Thy Name In earth and sea and sky; One sinner by his sin has marred The blissful harmony. O Lord, create man’s heart anew, The heart of stone remove: Then hymns of praise again shall rise, The fruits of holy love. O for the songs that Thou wilt bless, Where heart and voice agree; O for the prayers that plead aright With Thy dread majesty. • [Gen 28:17] Blest Hour, When Mortal Man Retires

  Blest hour, when mortal man retires To hold communion with his God; To send to Heaven his warm desires, And listen to the sacred word. Blest hour, when God Himself draws nigh, Well pleased His people’s voice to hear; To hush the penitential sigh, And wipe away the mourner’s tear. Blest hour, for, when the Lord resorts, Foretastes of future bliss are given; And mortals find His earthly courts The house of God, the gate of Heaven. Hail, peaceful hour! supremely blest Amid the hours of worldly care; The hour that yields the spirit rest, That sacred hour, the hour of prayer. And when my hours of prayer are past, And this frail tenement decays, Then may I spend in Heaven at last A never-ending hour of praise.

  I see angels ascending, descending on a stairway from heaven to earth. At the top stands the Lord, God of Abr’ham. He is mighty.   Lo, God is here! let us adore, And own how dreadful is this place! Let all within us feel His power, And silent bow before His face. Lo, God is here! Whom day and night United choirs of angels sing; To Him, enthroned above all height, The hosts of Heaven their praises bring. Gladly the toys of earth we leave, Wealth, pleasure, fame, for Thee alone; To Thee our will, soul, flesh, we give, O take, O seal them for Thine own! Disdain, not, Lord, our meaner song, Who praise Thee with a faltering tongue. To Thee may all our thoughts arise A true and ceaseless sacrifice.   Only begotten, Word of God eternal, Lord of Creation, merciful and mighty, List to Thy servants, when their tuneful voices Rise to Thy presence. Thus in our solemn Feast of Dedication, Graced with returning rites of due devotion, Ever Thy children, year by year rejoicing, Chant in Thy temple. This is Thy palace; here Thy presence-chamber; Here may Thy servants, at the mystic banquet, Daily adoring, take the Body broken, Drink of Thy chalice. Here for Thy children stands the holy laver, Fountain of pardon for the guilt of nature, Cleansed by whose water springs a race anointed, Liegemen of Jesus. Here in our sickness healing grace aboundeth, Light in our blindness, in our toil refreshment; Sin is forgiven, hope o’er fear prevaileth, Joy over sorrow. Hallowed this dwelling where the Lord abideth, This is none other than the gate of Heaven; Strangers and pilgrims, making homes eternal, Pass through its portals. Lord, we beseech Thee, as we throng Thy temple, By Thy past blessings, by Thy present bounty, Smile on Thy children, and with tender mercy, Hear our petitions. God in three Persons, Father everlasting, Son co-eternal, ever blessèd Spirit, Thine be the glory, praise and adoration, Now and forever.

  Holy Father, in Thy mercy, Hear our anxious prayer. Keep our loved ones, now far distant, ’Neath Thy care. When in sorrow, when in danger, When in loneliness, In Thy love look down and comfort Their distress.
