• [Gal 3:13] By Christ Redeemed, In Christ Restored

  By Christ redeemed, in Christ restored, We keep the memory adored, And show the death of our dear Lord, Until He come. His body broken in our stead Is here in this memorial bread, And so our feeble love is fed Until He come. The streams of His dread agony, His life blood shed for us, we see; The wine shall tell the mystery Until He come. And thus that dark betrayal night With the last advent we unite By one blest chain of loving rite Until He come. Until the trump of God be heard, Until the ancient graves be stirred, And, with the great commanding word, The Lord shall come. O blessèd hope! with this elate Let not our hearts be desolate, But, strong in faith, in patience wait Until He come.

• [Gal 3:13] Extended On A Cursèd Tree

  Extended on a cursèd tree, Besmeared with dust, and sweat, and blood, See there, the King of Glory see! Sinks and expires the Son of God. Who, who, my Savior, this hath done? Who could Thy sacred body wound? No guilt Thy spotless heart hath known, No guile hath in Thy lips been found. I, I alone, have done the deed! ’Tis I Thy sacred flesh have torn; My sins have caused Thee, Lord, to bleed, Pointed the nail, and fixed the thorn. The burden, for me to sustain Too great, on Thee, my Lord, was laid; To heal me, Thou hast borne my pain; To bless me, Thou a curse wast made. In the devouring lion’s teeth, Torn, and forsook of all, I lay; Thou sprang’st into the jaws of death, From death to save the helpless prey. Savior, how shall I proclaim? How pay the mighty debt I owe? Let all I have, and all I am, Ceaseless to all Thy glory show. Too much to Thee I cannot give; Too much I cannot do for Thee; Let all Thy love, and all Thy grief, Graven on my heart for ever be! The meek, the still, the lowly mind, O may I learn from Thee, my God, And love, with softest pity joined, For those that trample on Thy blood! Still let Thy tears, Thy groans, Thy sighs, O’erflow my eyes, and heave my breast, Till loose from flesh and earth I rise, And ever in Thy bosom rest.

  I will sing of my Redeemer, And His wondrous love to me; On the cruel cross He suffered, From the curse to set me free. Refrain Sing, oh sing, of my Redeemer, With His blood, He purchased me. On the cross, He sealed my pardon, Paid the debt, and made me free. I will tell the wondrous story, How my lost estate to save, In His boundless love and mercy, He the ransom freely gave. • [Gal 6:14] Above The Hills Of Time

  Above the hills of time the cross is gleaming, Fair as the sun when night has turned to day; And from it love’s pure light is richly streaming, To cleanse the heart and banish sin away. To this dear cross the eyes of men are turning, Today as in the ages lost to sight; And for Thee, O Christ, men’s hearts are yearning, As shipwrecked seamen yearn for morning light. The cross, O Christ, Thy wondrous love revealing, Awakes our hearts as with the light of morn, And pardon o’er our sinful spirits stealing, Tells us that we, in Thee, have been reborn. Like echoes to sweet temple bells replying Our hearts, O Lord, make answer to Thy love; And we will love Thee with a love undying, Till we are gathered to Thy home above.

• [Gal 6:14] Blest Jesus, When Thy Cross I View

  Blest Jesus, when Thy cross I view, That mystery to th’angelic host, I gaze with grief and rapture, too, And all my soul’s in wonder lost. What strange compassion filled Thy breast, That brought Thee from Thy throne on high, To woes that cannot be expressed, To be despised, to groan and die! For man didst Thou forsake the sky, To bleed upon the accursed tree? And didst Thou taste of death, to buy Immortal life and bliss for me? Had I a voice to praise Thy Name, Loud as the trump that wakes the dead, Had I the raptured seraph’s flame, My debt of love could ne’er be paid. Yet Lord, a sinner’s heart receive, This burdened, contrite heart of mine; Thou knowest I’ve naught beside to give; And let it be for ever Thine.

  Cross of Jesus, cross of sorrow, Where the blood of Christ was shed, Perfect Man on thee did suffer, Perfect God on thee has bled! Here the King of all the ages, Throned in light ere worlds could be, Robed in mortal flesh is dying, Crucified by sin for me. O mysterious condescending! O abandonment sublime! Very God Himself is bearing All the sufferings of time! Evermore for human failure By His passion we can plead; God has born all mortal anguish, Surely He will know our need. This—all human thought surpassing— This is earth’s most awful hour, God has taken mortal weakness! God has laid aside His Power! Once the Lord of brilliant seraphs, Winged with love to do His will, Now the scorn of all His creatures, And the aim of every ill. Up in Heaven, sublimest glory Circled round Him from the first; But the earth finds none to serve Him, None to quench His raging thirst. Who shall fathom that descending, From the rainbow circled throne, Down to earth’s most base profaning, Dying desolate alone. From the “Holy, Holy, Holy, We adore Thee, O most High,” Down to earth’s blaspheming voices And the shout of “Crucify.” Cross of Jesus, cross of sorrow, Where the blood of Christ was shed, Perfect Man on thee did suffer, Perfect God on thee has bled!

  On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross, The emblem of suffering and shame; And I love that old cross where the dearest and best For a world of lost sinners was slain.   The sign of the cross I triumphantly bear, Though none of my kindred that emblem may wear. I joyfully follow the champions of right, Who march on to glory, who march on to glory, Who march on to glory with weapons of might. The Pillar that guides us through peril and strife, The Rock that is cleft, giving waters of life, Is Christ and His cross. By His Spirit and Word The heart He refreshes, the heart He refreshes, The heart He refreshes, our Savior and Lord. • [Gal 6:14] When I Survey The Wondrous Cross

  When I survey the wondrous cross On which the Prince of glory died, My richest gain I count but loss, And pour contempt on all my pride. Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast, Save in the death of Christ my God! All the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to His blood. See from His head, His hands, His feet, Sorrow and love flow mingled down! Did e’er such love and sorrow meet, Or thorns compose so rich a crown? His dying crimson, like a robe, Spreads o’er His body on the tree; Then I am dead to all the globe, And all the globe is dead to me. Were the whole realm of nature mine, That were a present far too small; Love so amazing, so divine, Demands my soul, my life, my all. To Christ, who won for sinners grace By bitter grief and anguish sore, Be praise from all the ransomed race Forever and forevermore.
