Ezekiel 8:17

Context

8:17 He said to me, “Do you see, son of man? Is it a trivial thing that the house of Judah commits these abominations they are practicing here? For they have filled the land with violence and provoked me to anger still further. Look, they are putting the branch to their nose! 1

Ezekiel 10:19

Context
10:19 The cherubim spread 2  their wings, and they rose up from the earth 3  while I watched (when they went the wheels went alongside them). They stopped at the entrance to the east gate of the Lord’s temple as the glory of the God of Israel hovered above them.

Ezekiel 12:3

Context

12:3 “Therefore, son of man, pack up your belongings as if for exile. During the day, while they are watching, pretend to go into exile. Go from where you live to another place. Perhaps they will understand, 4  although they are a rebellious house.

Ezekiel 20:13

Context
20:13 But the house of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness; they did not follow my statutes and they rejected my regulations (the one who obeys them will live by them), and they utterly desecrated my Sabbaths. So I decided to pour out 5  my rage on them in the wilderness and destroy them. 6

Ezekiel 20:28

Context
20:28 I brought them to the land which I swore 7  to give them, but whenever they saw any high hill or leafy tree, they offered their sacrifices there and presented the offerings that provoke me to anger. They offered their soothing aroma there and poured out their drink offerings.

Ezekiel 23:24-25

Context
23:24 They will attack 8  you with weapons, 9  chariots, wagons, and with a huge army; 10  they will array themselves against you on every side with large shields, small shields, and helmets. I will assign them the task of judgment; 11  they will punish you according to their laws. 23:25 I will direct 12  my jealous anger against you, and they will deal with you in rage. They will cut off your nose and your ears, 13  and your survivors will die 14  by the sword. They will seize your sons and daughters, and your survivors will be consumed by fire.

Ezekiel 32:25

Context
32:25 Among the dead they have made a bed for her, along with all her hordes around her grave. 15  All of them are uncircumcised, killed by the sword, for their terror had spread in the land of the living. They bear their shame along with those who descend to the pit; they are placed among the dead.

Ezekiel 37:23

Context
37:23 They will not defile themselves with their idols, their detestable things, and all their rebellious deeds. I will save them from all their unfaithfulness 16  by which they sinned. I will purify them; they will become my people and I will become their God.

Ezekiel 39:10

Context
39:10 They will not need to take 17  wood from the field or cut down trees from the forests, because they will make fires with the weapons. They will take the loot from those who looted them and seize the plunder of those who plundered them, 18  declares the sovereign Lord.

Ezekiel 43:11

Context
43:11 When they are ashamed of all that they have done, make known to them the design of the temple, its pattern, its exits and entrances, and its whole design – all its statutes, its entire design, and all its laws; write it all down in their sight, so that they may observe its entire design and all its statutes and do them.

Ezekiel 44:11

Context
44:11 Yet they will be ministers in my sanctuary, having oversight at the gates of the temple, and serving the temple. They will slaughter the burnt offerings and the sacrifices for the people, and they will stand before them to minister to them.

1 tn It is not clear what the practice of “holding a branch to the nose” indicates. A possible parallel is the Syrian relief of a king holding a flower to his nose as he worships the stars (ANEP 281). See L. C. Allen, Ezekiel (WBC), 1:145-46. The LXX glosses the expression as “Behold, they are like mockers.”

2 tn Heb “lifted.”

3 tn Or “the ground” (NIV, NCV).

4 tn Heb “see.” This plays on the uses of “see” in v. 2. They will see his actions with their eyes and perhaps they will “see” with their mind, that is, understand or grasp the point.

5 tn Heb “and I said/thought to pour out.”

6 tn Heb “to bring them to an end.”

7 tn Heb “which I lifted up my hand.”

8 tn Heb “come against.”

9 tn This is the only occurrence of this term in the OT. The precise meaning is uncertain.

10 tn Heb “an assembly of peoples.”

11 tn Heb “I will place before them judgment.”

12 tn Heb “give.”

13 tn Heb “they will remove.”

sn This method of punishment is attested among ancient Egyptian and Hittite civilizations. See W. Zimmerli, Ezekiel (Hermeneia), 1:489.

14 tn Heb “fall.”

15 tn Heb “around him her graves,” but the expression is best emended to read “around her grave” (see vv. 23-24).

16 tc Heb “their dwellings.” The text as it stands does not make sense. Based on the LXX, a slight emendation of two vowels, including a mater, yields the reading “from their turning,” a reference here to their turning from God and deviating from his commandments. See BDB 1000 s.v. מְשׁוּבָה, and D. I. Block, Ezekiel (NICOT), 2:407.

17 tn Heb “they will not carry.”

18 tn Heb “loot their looters and plunder their plunderers.”
