Ezekiel 18:20

Context
18:20 The person who sins is the one who will die. A son will not suffer 4  for his father’s iniquity, and a father will not suffer 5  for his son’s iniquity; the righteous person will be judged according to his righteousness, and the wicked person according to his wickedness. 6

Ezekiel 18:24

Ezekiel 23:25

Ezekiel 25:13

25:13 So this is what the sovereign Lord says: I will stretch out my hand against Edom, and I will kill the people and animals within her, 15  and I will make her desolate; from Teman to Dedan they will die 16  by the sword.

Ezekiel 31:14

Context
31:14 For this reason no watered trees will grow so tall; their tops will not reach into the clouds, nor will the well-watered ones grow that high. 17  For all of them have been appointed to die in the lower parts of the earth; 18  they will be among mere mortals, 19  with those who descend to the pit.

Ezekiel 33:11

Context
33:11 Say to them, ‘As surely as I live, declares the sovereign Lord, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but prefer that the wicked change his behavior 20  and live. Turn back, turn back from your evil deeds! 21  Why should you die, O house of Israel?’

1 sn The judgment of plague and famine comes from the covenant curse (Lev 26:25-26). As in v. 10, the city of Jerusalem is figuratively addressed here.

2 sn Judgment by plague, famine, and sword occurs in Jer 21:9; 27:13; Ezek 6:11, 12; 7:15.

3 tn Heb “human lives” or “souls.”

4 tn Heb “lift up, bear.”

5 tn Heb “lift up, bear.”

6 tn Heb “the righteousness of the righteous one will be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked one will be upon him.”

7 tn Heb “because of them he will die.”

8 tn Heb “give.”

9 tn Heb “they will remove.”

sn This method of punishment is attested among ancient Egyptian and Hittite civilizations. See W. Zimmerli, Ezekiel (Hermeneia), 1:489.

10 tn Heb “fall.”

11 tn Heb “the pride of your strength” means “your strong pride.”

12 sn Heb “the delight of your eyes.” Just as Ezekiel was deprived of his beloved wife (v. 16, the “desire” of his “eyes”) so the Lord would be forced to remove the object of his devotion, the temple, which symbolized his close relationship to his covenant people.

13 tn Heb “the object of compassion of your soul.” The accentuation in the traditional Hebrew text indicates that the descriptive phrases (“the source of your confident pride, the object in which your eyes delight, and your life’s passion”) modify the preceding “my sanctuary.”

14 tn Heb “fall.”

15 tn Heb “and I will cut off from her man and beast.”

16 tn Heb “fall.”

17 tn Heb “and they will not stand to them in their height, all the drinkers of water.”

18 tn Heb “for death, to the lower earth.”

19 tn Heb “the sons of men.”

20 tn Heb “turn from his way.”

21 tn Heb “ways.” This same word is translated “behavior” earlier in the verse.
