Esther 1:12
Context1:12 But Queen Vashti refused 2 to come at the king’s bidding 3 conveyed through the eunuchs. Then the king became extremely angry, and his rage consumed 4 him.
Esther 5:13
Context5:13 Yet all of this fails to satisfy me so long as I have to see Mordecai the Jew sitting at the king’s gate.”
Esther 6:5
Context6:5 The king’s attendants said to him, “It is Haman who is standing in the courtyard.” The king said, “Let him enter.”
Esther 6:12
Context6:12 Then Mordecai again sat at the king’s gate, while Haman hurried away to his home, mournful and with a veil over his head.
Esther 6:14
Context6:14 While they were still speaking with him, the king’s eunuchs arrived. They quickly brought Haman to the banquet that Esther had prepared.
Esther 7:10
Context7:10 So they hanged Haman on the very gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. The king’s rage then abated.
Esther 9:11
Context9:11 On that same day the number of those killed in Susa the citadel was brought to the king’s attention.
1 tn Heb “to cause to drink” (Hiphil infinitive construct of שָׁקָה, shaqah). As the etymology of the Hebrew word for “banquet” (מִשְׁתֶּה, mishteh, from שָׁתָה, shatah, “to drink”) hints, drinking was a prominent feature of ancient Near Eastern banquets.
2 sn Refusal to obey the king was risky even for a queen in the ancient world. It is not clear why Vashti behaved so rashly and put herself in such danger. Apparently she anticipated humiliation of some kind and was unwilling to subject herself to it, in spite of the obvious dangers. There is no justification in the biblical text for an ancient Jewish targumic tradition that the king told her to appear before his guests dressed in nothing but her royal high turban, that is, essentially naked.
