  Onward! Christian, to the conflict, Hark! the sound of battle near, Take the sword thy Lord hath giv’n thee, Word of truth forever dear. Refrain Onward! onward! Take ye, therefore, God’s whole armor, That ye stand in evil days, Girt with truth, and as a breastplate, Righteousness in all thy ways. • [Eph 6:13] Sinner, Art Thou Still Secure?

  Sinner, art thou still secure? Wilt thou still refuse to pray? Can thy heart or hands endure In the Lord’s avenging day? See, His mighty arm is bared! Awful terrors clothe His brow! For His judgment stand prepared, Thou must either break or bow. At His presence nature shakes, Earth affrighted hastes to flee; Solid mountains melt like wax, What will then become of thee? Who His advent may abide? You that glory in your shame, Will you find a place to hide When the world is wrapped in flame? Then the rich, the great, the wise, Trembling, guilty, self condemned; Must behold the wrathful eyes Of the Judge they once blasphemed: Where are now their haughty looks? O, their horror and despair! When they see the opened books And their dreadful sentence hear! Lord, prepare us by Thy grace, Soon we must resign our breath, And our souls be called to pass, Through the iron gate of death. Let us now our day improve, Listen to the Gospel voice; Seek the things that are above; Scorn the world’s pretended joys.

• [Eph 6:13] Soldiers Of Christ, Arise

  Soldiers of Christ, arise, and put your armor on, Strong in the strength which God supplies through His eternal Son. Strong in the Lord of hosts, and in His mighty power, Who in the strength of Jesus trusts is more than conqueror. Stand then in His great might, with all His strength endued, But take, to arm you for the fight, the panoply of God; That, having all things done, and all your conflicts passed, Ye may o’ercome through Christ alone and stand entire at last. Stand then against your foes, in close and firm array; Legions of wily fiends oppose throughout the evil day. But meet the sons of night, and mock their vain design, Armed in the arms of heavenly light, of righteousness divine. Leave no unguarded place, no weakness of the soul, Take every virtue, every grace, and fortify the whole; Indissolubly joined, to battle all proceed; But arm yourselves with all the mind that was in Christ, your Head. But, above all, lay hold on faith’s victorious shield; Armed with that adamant and gold, be sure to win the field: If faith surround your heart, Satan shall be subdued, Repelled his every fiery dart, and quenched with Jesu’s blood. Jesus hath died for you! What can His love withstand? Believe, hold fast your shield, and who shall pluck you from His hand? Believe that Jesus reigns; all power to Him is giv’n: Believe, till freed from sin’s remains; believe yourselves to Heav’n. To keep your armor bright, attend with constant care, Still walking in your Captain’s sight, and watching unto prayer. Ready for all alarms, steadfastly set your face, And always exercise your arms, and use your every grace. Pray without ceasing, pray, your Captain gives the word; His summons cheerfully obey and call upon the Lord; To God your every want in instant prayer display, Pray always; pray and never faint; pray, without ceasing, pray! In fellowship alone, to God with faith draw near; Approach His courts, besiege His throne with all the powers of prayer: Go to His temple, go, nor from His altar move; Let every house His worship know, and every heart His love. To God your spirits dart, your souls in words declare, Or groan, to Him Who reads the heart, the unutterable prayer: His mercy now implore, and now show forth His praise, In shouts, or silent awe, adore His miracles of grace. Pour out your souls to God, and bow them with your knees, And spread your hearts and hands abroad, and pray for Zion’s peace; Your guides and brethren bear for ever on your mind; Extend the arms of mighty prayer, ingrasping all mankind. From strength to strength go on, wrestle and fight and pray, Tread all the powers of darkness down and win the well fought day. Still let the Spirit cry in all His soldiers, “Come!” Till Christ the Lord descends from high and takes the conquerors home.

  Gird on, gird on your armor, and away, Like heroes be firm and true; Lead on your ranks to battle for the Lord, Who triumphed over death and the grave for you.   Stand up, stand up for Jesus, ye soldiers of the cross; Lift high His royal banner, it must not suffer loss. From victory unto victory His army shall He lead, Till every foe is vanquished, and Christ is Lord indeed. Stand up, stand up for Jesus, the solemn watchword hear; If while ye sleep He suffers, away with shame and fear; Where’er ye meet with evil, within you or without, Charge for the God of battles, and put the foe to rout. Stand up, stand up for Jesus, the trumpet call obey; Forth to the mighty conflict, in this His glorious day. Ye that are brave now serve Him against unnumbered foes; Let courage rise with danger, and strength to strength oppose. Stand up, stand up for Jesus, stand in His strength alone; The arm of flesh will fail you, ye dare not trust your own. Put on the Gospel armor, each piece put on with prayer; Where duty calls or danger, be never wanting there. Stand up, stand up for Jesus, each soldier to his post, Close up the broken column, and shout through all the host: Make good the loss so heavy, in those that still remain, And prove to all around you that death itself is gain. Stand up, stand up for Jesus, the strife will not be long; This day the noise of battle, the next the victor’s song. To him who overcometh a crown of life shall be; They with the King of Glory shall reign eternally.

• [Eph 6:17] Inspirer Of The Ancient Seers

  Inspirer of the ancient seers Who wrote from Thee the sacred page, The same through all succeeding years; To us, in our degenerate age, The spirit of Thy Word impart, And breathe the life into our heart. While now Thine oracles we read With earnest prayer and strong desire, O let Thy Spirit from Thee proceed, Our souls to waken and inspire, Our weakness help, our darkness chase, And guide us by the light of grace. Whene’er in error’s path we rove, The living God through sin forsake, Our conscience by Thy Word reprove, Convince and bring the wanderers back, Deep wounded by Thy Spirit’s sword, And then by Gilead’s balm restored. The sacred lessons of Thy grace, Transmitted through Thy Word, repeat, And train us up in all Thy ways To make us in Thy will complete; Fulfill Thy love’s redeeming plan, And bring us to a perfect man. Thus furnished from Thy treasury, O may we always ready stand To help the souls redeemed by Thee, In what their various states demand To teach, convince, correct, reprove, And build them up in holiest love!

  Eternal life is in God’s Word For dead and dying men; By it alone we know the Lord, Unseen by mortal ken. • [Eph 6:17] Precious Bible! What A Treasure

  Precious Bible! what a treasure Does the Word of God afford? All I want for life or pleasure, Food and med’cine, shield and sword: Let the world account me poor, Having this I need no more. Food to which the world’s a stranger, Here my hungry soul enjoys; Of excess there is no danger, Though it fills, it never cloys: On a dying Christ I feed, He is meat and drink indeed. When my faith is faint and sickly, Or when Satan wounds my mind, Cordials, to revive me quickly, Healing med’cines here I find: To the promises I flee, Each affords a remedy. In the hour of dark temptation Satan cannot make me yield; For the Word of consolation Is to me a mighty shield While the scripture truths are sure, From his malice I’m secure. Vain his threats to overcome me, When I take the Spirits’ sword; Then with ease I drive him from me. Satan trembles at the word: ’Tis a sword for conquest made, Keen the edge, and strong the blade. Shall I envy then the miser Doting on his golden store? Sure I am, or should be, wiser, I am rich, ’tis he is poor: Jesus gives me in his word, Food and med’cine, shield and sword.

  Soldiers of the cross, arise! Gird you with your armor bright! Mighty are your enemies, Hard the battle ye must fight. O’er a faithless fallen world, Raise your banner in the sky! Let it float there wide unfurled! Bear it onward! lift it high! Mid the homes of want and woe, Strangers to the living Word, Let the Savior’s herald go! Let the voice of hope be heard! Where the shadows deepest lie, Carry truth’s unsullied ray! Where are crimes of blackest dye, There the saving sign display! To the weary and the worn Tell of realms where sorrows cease!   When Thy soldiers take their swords, When they speak the solemn words, When they kneel before Thee here, Feeling Thee, their Father, near; These Thy children, Lord, defend; To their help Thy Spirit send. When the world’s sharp strife is nigh, When they hear the battle cry, When they rush into the fight, Knowing not temptation’s might; These Thy children, Lord, defend; To their zeal Thy wisdom lend. When their hearts are lifted high With success or victory, When they feel the conqueror’s pride; Lest they grow self satisfied, These Thy children, Lord, defend; Teach their souls to Thee to bend. When the vows that they have made, When the prayers that they have prayed, Shall be fading from their hearts; When their first warm faith departs; These Thy children, Lord, defend; Keep them faithful to the end. Through life’s conflicts guard us all, Or if wounded some should fall Ere the victory be won, For the sake of Christ, Thy Son, These Thy children, Lord, defend; And in death Thy comfort bend.
