  One sole baptismal sign, One Lord below, above, Zion, one faith is thine, One only watchword—love; From different temples though it rise, One song ascendeth to the skies. Our Sacrifice is one, One Priest before the throne, The slain, the risen Son, Redeemer, Lord alone; And sighs from contrite hearts that spring Our chief, our choicest offering. O may that holy prayer, His tenderest, and His last, His constant, latest care, Ere to His throne He passed, No longer unfulfilled remain, The world’s offense, His people’s stain. Head of Thy Church beneath, The catholic, the true, On all her members breathe Her broken frame renew; Then shall Thy perfect will be done, When Christians love and live as one.

• [Eph 4:7] Grace, ’tis A Charming Sound

  Grace, ’tis a charming sound, Harmonious to mine ear; Heaven with the echo shall resound, And all the earth shall hear. Grace first contrived the way To save rebellious man; And all the steps that grace display Which drew the wondrous plan. Grace first inscribed my name In God’s eternal book; ’Twas grace that gave me to the Lamb, Who all my sorrows took. Grace led my roving feet To tread the heavenly road; And new supplies each hour I meet, While pressing on to God. Grace taught my soul to pray And made mine eyes o’erflow; ’Twas grace which kept me to this day, And will not let me go. Grace all the work shall crown, Through everlasting days; It lays in heaven the topmost stone, And well deserves the praise. O let Thy grace inspire My soul with strength divine My all my powers to Thee aspire, And all my days be Thine.

• [Eph 4:9] Into The Dim Earth’s Lowest Parts Descending

  Into the dim earth’s lowest parts descending, And bursting by Thy might the infernal chain That bound the prisoners, Thou, at three days’ ending, As Jonah from the whale, hast risen again. Thou brakest not the seal, Thy surety’s token, Arising from the tomb Who left’st in birth The portals of virginity unbroken, Opening the gates of Heaven to sons of earth. Thou, Sacrifice ineffable and living, Didst to the Father by Thyself atone As God eternal: resurrection giving To Adam, general parent, by Thine own.

  Jesu, for the beacon-light By Thy holy Doctors given, When the mists of error’s night, Gathered o’er the path to Heav’n; For the witness that they bare To the truth they learned of Thee, For the glory that they share, Let our praise accepted be. In Jerusalem below They were workmen at Thy call, Each with one hand met the foe, With the other built the wall; Watchmen on the mountain set, Scribes instructed in Thy Word, Fishers with the Gospel net, Drawing souls to Thee their Lord. Like Thy learnèd sons of yore, Jesu, may Thy Pastors still Know and teach Thy sacred lore With brave heart and patient skill; In these latter days of strife Keep, O keep them true to Thee, Till beside the well of life Light in Thine own light they see.
